US Set to Tighten the Travel Requirements for Tourists

UK tourists wanting to spend time in the US will be faced with visa difficulties as the US government has tightened the country’s immigration rules regarding passports.

Following the changes, spending holidays in the United States have become more difficult for tourists from the UK since the US government made stricter rules for the country’s entry requirements.

At the moment, UK citizens who want to holiday in the US are required to apply for an Electronic System for Travel Authorization, ESTA for short. This application must be made through the Visa Waiver Program. This authorization when obtained permits its holder to stay in the US for up to 90 days.

By acquiring the ESTA, tourists traveling to the US do not need to get a full visa before they could enter the country.

The ESTA is not always Enough

But then, with the stricter rules introduced by the US government, tourists who do not have the e-passport or biometric passport, are required to have a full visa before traveling. This makes the whole process more tedious.

Some travelers think that the ESTA grants them an automatic pass into the US, but there is no guarantee to this. A British Muslim family had an unpleasant and disappointing experience last year when they were removed from their flight to the US city of Los Angeles. This happened, despite their possession of ESTAs which was granted them online.

They were not given reasons as to why they were removed from their flight or why they could not travel to the US.

The incidence is rare, but then, it is a valid instance where having the ESTA was not enough for travelers to enter the US.

In some other instances, the holders had either overstayed their visas in the US sometime in the past or had worked in the US without the relevant permit.

There are so many reasons why people who had the ESTA were not allowed to enter the US.

It is worthy of note, however, as is stated on the ESTA website, that one whose ESTA application was denied, cannot appeal the process. The applicant can alternatively, apply to get either the B1 or B2 visa which gives one a pass into the US for medical, business or transit reasons.
