US is Open to Legal Merit-based Immigration

On Wednesday, another strong pitch for immigration on merit-based was made by the US President, Donald Trump, in his address at the annual state of the union. He stated that the country is blessed and enriched by legal immigrants in various ways. This raised the hope of lots of Indian IT professionals who have suffered most from the present per country quota system.

In his second State of the Union (SUTO), he said that creating an immigration system which protects the jobs and lives of the US citizens is a moral duty. As such, he has called for an end to the chain migration. This migration was the easiest and fastest way of entering the country legally; by which an already legal citizen or resident of the country who is a family member sponsors the person.

According to Trump, the Mexico border issue threatens the safety and well-being of the citizens in the country.

He said that a commonsense proposal had been sent by his administration to the Congress to put a stop to the crisis at the southern border. He further stated that only illegal immigration shows a better division between America’s political class and working class.

He accused the wealthy politicians of living behind guards, walls, and gates, while they contest for open borders, leaving the working class to suffer the consequences of illegal immigration which include overburdened hospitals and schools, increased crime, lower wages, etc.

Call for Unity of purpose between Democrats and Republicans

He encourages the Democrats and Republicans to tackle this national crisis on a bipartisan stance.

He further said that Congress has 10 days left to pass the bill which is set to fund the government so that they can secure the border and also protect the country.

He alleged that due to the open areas, sex and human trafficking, smuggling women and young girls in thousands into the country, selling them into slavery and prostitution. Also, lethal drugs like heroin, methamphetamine, fentanyl, and cocaine have killed lots of citizens in the country.
