US H-1B Visa Petitions for 2020 Hit the 65,000 Cap

The US Citizenship and Immigration Services had announced that the number of H-1B visa applications filed in so far had hit its mandated cap of 65,000 for the 2020 fiscal year. Companies in the US use the H-1B visa scheme to employ foreign professionals in specialty occupations that require experts who have theoretical or technical knowledge. The visa scheme is a non-immigrant visa and provides a platform for US tech companies to hire workers in their tens of thousands annually. These professionals are mostly from China and India. Last Friday, the USCIS, which is responsible for handling such applications, said the visa scheme had reached its mandated number of petitions for the 2020 fiscal year. The 2020 fiscal year will kick off by the 1st of October, 2019. Meanwhile, the submission of visa petitions commenced on April 1. The agency, however, didn't disclose the total number of petitions it received in those 5 days.

The USCIS is yet to determine if the master's cap had been reached

The USCIS went on to reveal that it will next find out if the master's cap — which is for applicants who have an advanced degree from the US — has reached its cap of 20,000 petitions. Meanwhile, the agency has assured all those whose petitions were not prohibited multiple filings nor was selected after the cap was reached, that their visa fees will be rejected and returned. All current H-1B visa holders who filed a petition this time, but have already been counted against the cap and still have their cap number, will not take part in the visa program for the fiscal year 2020. This year's applications mark the first season of petitions for the H-1B visa after the new rules for the visa program were announced by the USCIS. The H-1B visa is the most preferred visa program for professionals who want to work in the US.
