Charities and MPs have pressurized the government to relax the rules on family reunion for refugees who are in the country.
Currently, with the present immigration rules, only applications for civil and married partners and children under the age of 18 are permitted to be reunited with the adult refugees. Although, the children above 18 years, parents and grandparents are exempted.
Also, children who are currently based in the UK alone and are refugees, have no right to unite with their family members.
Need for Change
To relax these stringent rules, campaigners and MPs demand a change in the rules. This can either be done by a private member’s bill being put through by Angus Macrveil (SNP MP) or by amending the government’s flagship Post-Brexit Immigration Bill.
Supporters will be called this week by Oxfam to support the changes and increase the pressure on the ministers through contact with their MPs.
Numerous MPs brought this family reunion issue up at the House of Commons when the Immigration bill was debated last week.
The SNP’s spokesman for immigration Stuart McDonald told the Commons that, in terms of refugee family reunion in place, the UK is an outline and worse, there is no mention of asylum in the Immigration bill and as such, there is little chance for such issues to be discussed.
The Shadow Immigration Minister, Afzal Khan said the bill is an opportunity missed for the failures in the humanitarian and moral failures of the Tory government, with regards to asylum seekers and refugees, to be confronted. He said that little was mentioned about asylum seekers in the white paper. As such, an end must be put to this detention that’s indefinite, and family reunion for refugees should be fixed.
According to Sajid Javid, the Home Secretary, continually reviewing the rules is right to ensure fairness always.
