MPs Slam Android-only App for EU Citizens to Apply for Settled Status

The Home office has been accused by the MEPs and the 71 Labour MPs, of digital discrimination by creating an Android-only app which is to be used by the European Union citizens to appeal for settled status.

Frontbenchers, with the Shadow Brexit Minister Paul Blomfield and Shadow Environment Minister Luke Poland inclusive, wrote an open letter to Sajid Javid, the Home Secretary, telling him that the system does not fairly treats the EU citizens.

Gordon Marsden, Liz Kendall, Emma Dent Coad, Luciana Berger, Margaret Hodge, Harriet Harman and Matthew Pennycook who are signatories said that the system is causing a significant amount of distress to their constituents and as such poses another obstacle between them and post-Brexit certainty for their families.

What is set to happen?

Since January 21, EU citizens, about 3.6 million living in the country, have been able to make applications for settled status using Android-only app for identity confirmation with the use of passport, afterward, they are to log on to gov.uk website to complete their application, with a proof of 5 years stay in the UK.

At one of the 13 centers in the country, there is identity verification for any individual who does not have the right phone to use.

A day after Britain is to leave the European Union, March 30, identity documents will be made available to the applicants, to be checked by post and there will be an expansion of checking centers to more than 50. According to the Home office, the system presently is a voluntary test.

Correspondence has been received from the constituents, as claimed by a lot of MPs, on their rights to work and live in the country after Brexit but cannot complete their application because they do not have the phone type specified by the Home office.

The Labour MP, Jess Phillips offered her mobile phone for use by any of her Birmingham Yardley constitutes.

Also, two mobile phones have been paid for by Addenbrooke’s hospital in Cambridge for staff use.
