Brexit: Labour Demands UK Developers To Train British Workers

Plans currently under consideration by labour will demand that for every foreign worker hired, housing developers be compelled to train a British worker. John Healey, the secretary for Shadow Housing, said the party was coming up with new rules that will mount more pressure on wealthy housebuilders so they would pour more funds into strengthening the UK workforce. The attention on housebuilders came from the sector's huge profit last year. A firm called Persimmon had last year, reported the explosive profits of £1 billion in the industry. Housebuilders had made this profit while also benefiting from Help to Buy Scheme, a project of the government. The pressures from Brexit could also affect the industry severely since out of every 6 workers, one is from the EU-member states. In London, the ratio is one in two. For this reason, Labour is coming up with an arrangement which will impose it on developers to sponsor the training of a British worker every time they hire a foreign worker.

The industry will get something in return

In reciprocation, there will be a faster visa process for all applicants from the construction industry after Brexit. Leaders in the industry have warned the government of a severe shortage of skills in construction. Build the UK corroborated the skill-shortage announcement by saying that due to the lack of experienced workers, projects were delayed. A research conducted by the Department of Education revealed that out of every 5 vacancies in the construction industry, 2 were not easy to fill because applicants didn't have the required skills nor experience. The construction industry in the UK depends on the EU for a huge percentage of its workforce. The Home Builders Federation — HBF for short — conducted a survey recently which says that 17.7% of the workforce in the industry came from the EU while just 2% are from other countries. London's workforce has 56.3 of foreigners. Those from EU countries are a little below 50%.
