South Africa to Launch an E-visa System by October

South Africa will be launching a new e-visa system by October 1, 2019.

The acting director-general of Home Affairs, Thulani Mavuso, while speaking to eNCA, revealed that the visa system will enhance the environment for investment and make it more conducive to attract people with in-demand skills.

According to him, the coming visa system is currently in its testing stage, and once it's completed, they would run a proper pilot with some countries. After that, it will be ready for production.

Earlier this year, Blessing Manale, a spokesperson for the Department of Tourism said in an interview, that the visa regime in South Africa has posed as one of the drawbacks in Tourism in the country. According to her, the coming of the e-visas will be of tremendous benefit to tourists as well as the country's economy.

This is possible according to her explanation because the system will reinforce tourism in the country with predictability, making it possible for people to stay longer in the country or even study as the case may be.

She added that the visa system will make things easier and faster for travelers as they would no longer have to spend so much time at airports waiting for approval.

E-gates are coming too

The country's Home Affairs Office is also planning to install e-gates in many of the airports in the country this year.

One of their spokespersons revealed that they will first pilot the e-gates at the Cape Town International Airport. These e-gates will become part of the procedure for the Biometric Movement Control System (BMCS)

After that, other airports in the country will follow suit such as King Shaka International Airport and OR Tambo.

The spokesperson further revealed that the main objective of this project is to provide low-risk travelers with a self-service option so as to make their movement swifter and seamless. South African adult passport holders, however, will be the focus of the first phase.
