The UK government has published the long-expected white paper on immigration. This white paper states the changes that have been made to the rules guiding student visa rules. There have been changes to the length of time that students running their bachelor, masters and Ph.D. programs can stay in the UK after their graduation.
The white paper also stated that the lowest salary amount that will allow any of these graduates to access the job market could be £30,000. But for graduate entry jobs, the salary amount at the entry level will be a lower threshold requirement. These salary requirements will be thoroughly reviewed by spring.
Following a report on students published by MAC, the UK government stated its skill oriented plans for immigration and announced its intention to make a better offer to students than the one currently on the table.
All students, who have finished a degree program in the UK and have any desire to stay back in the UK to work qualify for a post-study leave that will last for six months. This is an extra offer considering that MAC recommended the proposal only for the matters program only. But the government went a step further by including the bachelor's graduates too.
For Ph.D. graduates, it will be a 12-month leave. With these proposals, there is sure to be no limit on the number of international students in the UK
provided they are genuine.
More details in the white paper include plans to allow undergraduate students and above who have three months left to complete their program to switch to the “skilled workers” program in the UK
. For those outside of the UK, they will only be able to change after two years of graduation.
Britain's, Home Secretary, Sajid Javid, speaking to the BBC yesterday, said that the UK should be more open to receiving international students. According to him, being welcoming did not end at giving them the opportunity to study in UK
universities, but to make it easier for those of them who graduate to settle and work in the UK
. To this end, the salary bar requirement will be brought lower.
