UK: MPs Urge Home Office to Act on the Plight of Students Wrongly Caught

Ministers and campaigners in the UK have accused the country's Home Office of doing nothing about the horrible situation of international students wrongly arrested about five years ago who are still in detention amidst enormous terror. They said the hostile environment created by Prime Minister Theresa May is the reason for the arrests and hence urged the Home Office to do something. An investigation saw more than 35,000 people charged with malpractices in English language tests and was thereafter detained, but MPs now say the investigation was flawed with the majority of the people involved innocent of the charge and they want Home Office to clear their names. They also express their concern regarding the lack of transparency in the number of students refused permission to remain in the UK or deported in the last two years. MPs revealed their readiness to look into the matter following the report of some still being detained while the mental health of others has deteriorated. Conduct Another Test A Labour MP, Stephen Timms, said the students must be allowed to write a fresh test, given a visa if successful and ultimately given the opportunity to clear their names. The minister said though Home Secretary promised to look into each case, he has not replied his letters including ones sent before Christmas. Timms emphasized the unfavorable situation students all over the country face in terms of this scandal. He said the Home office released a student following a letter he wrote to them. Given the hardship faced by innocent students, a group has been set up to investigate the situations thoroughly ahead of its first meeting next month. Home Office has to stop this shocking act of detaining international students unnecessarily, said the director of Migrant Voice - Nazek Ramadan.
