The number of Indian students who showed interest in studying in the UK had been on a constant decline with a high number of 39,090 students who came to the UK in 2010/2011 falling steadily to as low as 16,550 students in 2016/2017. Surprisingly, the figures shot up to 19,750 in 2017/2018, being the first time after so many years of a steady decline.
The UK is becoming more welcoming to international students
The Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA)
released some figures on Thursday which revealed that the UK is still not the top study destination for Indian students, but as it is, the reputation of the UK as an unwelcoming destination for international students is slightly fading away.
Students from India and other non-EU countries usually pay fees that are at least three times more than what their counterparts from the UK and EU countries pay. There has been huge research which reports show that international students contribute billions of pounds to the UK.
The figures from HESA also show that there were more Chinese students in the UK
than from any other country in 2017/2018. In this same year, one-third of students in the UK who are from non-EU countries were from China alone.
In November 2018, the UK Home Office published some immigration statistics which compared international student enrolments in the country with focus from September 2017 to September 2018. The research revealed an upsurge of sponsored study visas issued to student applicants from India which was at 18,735, a 33% increase.
The primary reason for which Indian students
lost interest in studying in the UK
was the ending of the post-study work visa in 2012. The visa program had been common especially among students who sponsored their education in the UK. Although the program has not been brought back, the rules for a post-study stay has been relaxed.
