The Immigration debate has largely revolved around the country’s southern border over the last two years. Even with the US administration’s struggle to tackle the illegal entries into the country and also check the increasing number of American families coming to the US, the so-called border ‘crisis’, as termed by the US president Donald Trump, has been a sore spot on the country’s administration and it is still growing.
This controversy got to its climax in late December, when the partial government shutdown was initiated after Democrats refused to authorize the $5.7 billion needed to fund the border wall, which the president stressed that it’s important to protect the Americans.
The US government under Trump’s administration has been battling with the large influx of migrants, both legal and illegal migrants who wait in Tijuana, Mexico for a chance to apply for asylum legally. However, there has been a new development on the northern border, as lots of migrants are heading that way, seeking peace, safety, and better promising lives. They are leaving the US for Canada.
Almost 40,000 migrants have crossed from the US to Canada illegally since 2017, among which Blaise Kidasharira, a 34-year old former Doctor without Borders Physicians and member of Tutsi ethnic minority was one.
Although these illegal crossings started when migrants in the US were afraid of being deported owing to Trump’s hardline immigration policy, the situation has changed drastically as many illegal migrants are trooping into the country, using the US-Canada border.
Why Canada is considered Safe
There are many theories as to why the asylum seekers to make Canada an attractive prospect. Among them is the deputy Major of Champlain, Janet McFetridge, who said that Canada has created an excellent reputation for being a good safe.
Even the present condition of the ‘dead end’ of Roxham road (the US Canada border) shows Canada is readily in acceptance of asylum seekers. The road which used to be a muddy ditch filled with weeds has been cleared.
David Gervais, the only practicing Plattsburgh-based immigration and criminal-defense lawyer said the asylum seekers have more faith in the Canadian immigration system
than in the US.
Anti-immigration to tackle global immigration crisis
According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, more than 25 million individuals are refugees across the world, and about 1 million individuals are asylum seekers in new countries yearly. Even a country like Canada, which is a Refugee-friendly country also has problems setting up humane but orderly policies to tackle the influx of illegal migrants
As such, there is an Anti-Immigrant sentiment around the western world where refuge seekers are plenty.
US government, under the administration of Trump, is not the only country to have stepped up their immigration policies
. Other country leaders like Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor and Emmanuel Macron, the French President, have also done same in their countries respectively. Even Canada is not left out, as it also rejects asylum seekers, though still not as much as what it receives yearly.
However, with the hardliner's immigration policies, Canada benefits from US losses, as many asylum seekers are entering the US, not with the intention of staying but to run to Canada through the small rural village on the US Canada border.
