The Canadian Association of Latin American and Caribbean Studies — ALACS for short — yesterday responded to the many obstacles posing as challenges to scholars in the region who want to apply for visas to Canada.
They expressed their concerns in a letter addressed to Justin Trudeau, Canada's Prime Minister, over the barriers scholars and researchers from Latin America and the Caribbean encounter while applying for visas to attend meetings and other academic conferences in Canada.
The group publicized its protest, especially in the case of its recently held 50th yearly conference where three Cubans, one Brazilian, and four distinguished scholars from Latin America could not get visas to attend the conference. The event was held from the 10th — 12th of May at the University of York in Toronto.
The Applicants were Treated with Disrespect and Arrogance
The group published the letter on its website expressing their resentment over what they called an arrogant and disrespectful treatment given out to the Cuban scholars by the Canadian Embassy in Havana, particularly, its Visa Section.
The embassy told the Cubans that they have to reapply on May 8 in a third country — a date which was only two days before the start of the conference.
According to the letter written to the Prime Minister, the ALACS is in close contact and relations with the many communities that constitute the diversity of the Caribbean and Latin America. This is not all; it also maintains good relations with research institutions, NGOs, and international academics in the region.
The Directive Council of ALACS signed this letter, and it insisted on the fact that the Canadian government ought to make deliberate and concerted efforts to maintain with other countries in that part of the world, excellent relations as regards to politics, economy, and culture.
