The number of Indian students studying in the UK has approximately doubled in the past three years, with above 21,000 student visas given to Indians till March 2019. A white paper on increasing the duration that students can reside and work post-study is in the works to make the UK an attractive goal for students of India, officials announced.
The number of students from India in the UK enrolled a 40% rise over the past year. Of the Indian students who appealed for visas, 96% were victorious, told Dominic Asquith, who is a British High Commissioner.
The Indian External Affairs Ministry announced in Parliament that as numerous as 7,52,725 students of India are studying overseas, with the US the chosen target for higher education. Canada and Australia receive the second & third places. Till date, the US has 2,11,703 Indian origin students.
There is a scheme to improve the post-study work benefits from the latest four months to twelve months, announced Tom Birtwistle, British Council, Director North India.
In September 2019, senior executives from the London School of Economics will conduct an Indian multi-city tour. At the close of the month, Leeds University team will also visit India.
A new program - the Research Initiative & UK India Education (UKIERI) Mobility Program: Study in India will enable undergraduate students from the UK to do a portion of their degree course in the institutes in India. The governments of the two countries support the program.
Approximately 200 students from the UK will be studying in India from Sept 2020 as a portion of the program, told Birtwistle.
